How a suitcase of tablets became a lifelong curiosity about how the body stays well — and a practice built on slow, considered care.
Odette Cilliers · Registered Therapeutic Reflexologist
In 2010, I was taking thirteen different tablets for ten different diagnoses. Hormone imbalance. Insulin resistance. A handful of others I can no longer even name.
That year I travelled overseas — a trip that was meant to be three weeks and turned into three months. Half of my carry-on luggage was taken up by tablets and creams. I could have opened a small pharmacy from my hand luggage.
One morning, before boarding a train to New York, I laid it all out in front of me and, for the first time, really looked at it. And I began to think.
How is one body supposed to cope with this many different chemicals? Surely there is a better way to stay well.
I was active. I loved good food. I slept reasonably well. And yet here I was, carrying a suitcase of medication and still unable to shift the ache in my body or the padding around my middle. Something did not add up.
That morning was the beginning of a very different journey.
A couple of years earlier, I had been introduced to Therapeutic Reflexology — and specifically to Vacuflex & Meridian Therapy. At the time it was simply the best hour of quiet I had given myself in years. I did not yet understand what it was doing; I only knew that I left those sessions feeling more like myself.
When I returned home from that long trip, I began to investigate in earnest. I wanted to understand how the body stays well when it is given the right conditions — rest, real food, movement, and a nervous system allowed to settle out of a constant state of fight-or-flight and back into rest, digest, and restore.
I want to be honest about what changed for me, because it matters. I had not been diagnosed with any chronic disease, and I make no claim that any single therapy healed me. What healed me — what brought me back into balance — was a series of choices I made, slowly, over years. I changed how I ate, choosing nutrient-rich, whole foods. I changed my attitude toward my health, my life, and the world. I came to understand something that sounds obvious but took me a long time to truly feel: that I am in control of my own decisions. That I could choose to want to be well, and then make the changes that wanting required.
I learned how my body actually works — what each organ needs to function at its best. I stayed connected to the earth. And, perhaps most importantly, I learned to be kind to myself. Mentally, spiritually, and physically, those choices steered me toward a healthier, more balanced person. It was hard work. It was worth every bit of effort.
It took me a few more years to make the leap into practice, but eventually I did: I trained, and I completed my Diploma in Therapeutic Reflexology. And that is when everything changed again — not only for me, but for the people I would come to work with.
I do not only practise this way of living. I have built my life around it.
I designed and planted my own vegetable garden, growing organic produce in soil that I let recover for six full months before I trusted it with anything edible. I moved into hydroponic growing. Alongside this, I've followed a personal curiosity into essential oils, tissue salts, and herbs for health — through online courses, books, and applying what I learn to my own life. I want to be clear that this is self-directed learning, not a formal qualification: I am not a qualified aromatherapist or herbalist, and I don't prescribe or use these with clients. It simply deepens my broader understanding of how the body stays well. My aim throughout has been to understand wellness not as a theory but as a daily, practical, hands-in-the-soil way of living.
I opened my practice in 2021. I completed my Reiki training in 2022. In 2025, I qualified as a Bowen Therapist. Each new modality has added another way of listening to the body and supporting its return to balance.
And the learning has not stopped. It never will. I love to learn, I love to share what I learn, and I love bringing all of it — the qualifications, the reading, the years of practice — into the quiet of a treatment room with someone who has decided it is time to feel well again.
I know what it is to carry a suitcase of tablets and wonder whether there is another way to feel well. I found mine — not in a single treatment, but in a way of living: better food, deeper rest, a connection to the earth, an ongoing curiosity about how the body works, and a decision to be kind to myself. The therapies I now practise are part of that way of living, not a replacement for medical care. I will never tell you to stop what your doctor has prescribed. What I offer sits alongside your medical care — a slower, gentler way of supporting the body so it can do what it has always known how to do: find its own way back to balance.
